Today, I saw the movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Cate Blanchett was magnificent; she should get another Oscar nomination. Geoffrey Rush (spymaster Francis  Walsingham), as always, was excellent. And Clive Owen gave a fine performance as Sir Walter Raleigh.

The movie itself was entertaining, though many liberties were taken in order to condense the story to two hours. Historical figures such as William Cecil, Robert Dudley and Francis Drake were omitted. Still the CGI effects of the Spanish Armada and English fleet slugging it out were well done.

There is a climatic scene were Elizabeth, in her nightgown without her wig, walks from her battle tent to the seaside cliff at night to watch the Armada burn. A visually dramatic sight to be sure, though I was bemused, for it reminded me of the Eurythmics video for Here Comes the Rain Again. Anyway, it is improbable that the scene actually happened for the Armada was on the other side of the channel, off Flanders, when the English attacked with fireships.

Despite its flaws, I do recommend this movie.
