I saw The Golden Compass today and liked it very much. The film is based on the novel "Northern Lights" written by Philip Pullman. The special effects were marvelous and the acting superb. Although Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig have top billing, the real star of the film is newcomer Dakota Blue Richards, who plays Lyra Belacqua. As the main protagonist, she carries the show as though she were a veteran. The strong supporting cast includes Ian McKellen, Ian McShane, Sam Elliott, and Derek Jacobi.
The film's look combined modern 1930's art deco and Albert Speer architecture with Middle Earth scenic grandeur and Narnia-like images of witches and sentient animals. I would describe it as J R R Tolkien and C S Lewis meet Philip K Dick.
Christian organizations (notably the Catholic League) have criticized the movie as an attack upon Christianity, citing as proof the fact that the author of the original story is an atheist. Mr. Pullman may be an atheist, and I may be an agnostic, but I interpreted the film as a polemic against tyranny, not the principle of love thy neighbor.
I can not say for certain what Mr. Tolkien, a devout Catholic, would have thought of the story, but Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee, both of whom were in The Lord of the Rings, are also in this movie. They clearly did not see this film as anti-Christian. (By the way, Christopher Lee personally knew Tolkien and admired him.)
